Holy Holidays and Clever Cocktails: Kosher Vodka, Buzzy Bunnies

Keeping the Spirit(s) And the Law…

Drinking cocktails during Passover is a bit of a challenge since a lot of everyday spirits don’t make the cut. Kosher dietary law prohibits the consumption of leavened grains, and spirits fermented from grains, during Passover. So it’s out with the whiskey, bourbon and Scotch and any liquors distilled from grain. However, the good news is: San Francisco’s Distillery No. 209 makes both a kosher gin and a sugar-based vodka. So, go ahead and pass over this delightful and refreshing cocktail to guests during your holiday celebrations.

Samson’s Riddle

Ingredients:

2 oz. Kosher-for-Passover Gin or Vodka

1 oz. Honey (Passover Certified)

.75 oz.  Lemon Juice

5 1-inch cubes of Fuji Apple

Directions: Muddle apple with lemon juice and honey. Add vodka or gin and shake vigorously with ice. Fine strain into rocks glass over ice and garnish with apple peel

Yield: 1 cocktail

    For the Christians who came a few thousand years late to the festivities… 

     candy bunny in a cupIt hardly seems a coincidence that a certain two weeks in the spring are the most holy time of year for both Christians and Jews. The Jews got first dibs. They also got saddled with upholding rules and tradition. Perhaps it was the youth of early Christians that led them to shed many of the ancient laws and taboos that had been handed down for generations. Without the burden of needing blessings for imbibing-there are no holds barred in the cocktail department. And, as evidenced by the recipe below, there are plenty of indulgences!

    Buzzy Bunny Easter Cocktail

    Ingredients:

    2 ounces white chocolate

    1/3 cup Nutella

    2 shots Baileys Irish Cream

    1 shot vodka

    1 cup milk

    2 mini solid chocolate Easter eggs

    Directions:

    To create a white chocolate rim around the top of your serving glasses:

    —melt the white chocolate in the microwave on 50% power, for 1-2 minutes

    Dip the rims of two glasses into the melted chocolate.

    Refrigerate two minutes until set.

    Meanwhile, add the Nutella, Baileys, vodka and milk into a blender.

    Blend until smooth.

    Place one chocolate Easter egg into the bottom of each chilled serving glass.

    Pour the blended concoction into the glasses. Serve and enjoy!
