Not to be irreverent but we’ve all heard the joke about Prince Albert in a can. When the Prince Consort to Queen Elizabeth ended up in a casket in 1861 the story goes that the bartender at Brook’s Club in London was so despondent over the royal’s death he demanded that even the champagne should be put to mourning: he proceeded to mix it with Guinness Black Stout.
The combination proved to be so delicious that the Black Velvet is one of the more popular of the ‘mixed beer’ cocktails flooding the market today. Queen Victoria mourned the death of her German Prince and the father of her nine children until the day she died. Tis only fitting his memory should be honored in pubs and taverns everywhere. Cheer, mates!
